When disaster strikes, working equines are lifelines.
Your gift today keeps families and their animals alive—delivering feed, water, emergency veterinary care, and essential supplies in places vehicles cannot reach.
Crisis at a Glance
Pakistan: Since June 2025, catastrophic monsoon flooding—exacerbated by flash floods and glacial lake outbursts—has devastated Punjab Province and beyond. Homes, livelihoods, and agricultural lands have been swept away, leaving families and their animals without food, shelter, or clean water.
Afghanistan: On August 31, 2025, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Kunar Province, near the Pakistan border, causing widespread destruction. Entire villages in remote, mountainous districts have been cut off from aid.
Both disasters have created humanitarian crises, with significant loss of life and widespread destruction. Relief efforts are ongoing, but working equines—donkeys, horses, and mules—remain critically at risk.
Brooke USA is mobilizing with our global partner Brooke (Action for Working Horses & Donkeys) and trusted in-country teams to deliver immediate, practical relief.
Donkeys will help to rebuild in the aftermath of the disasters.
Why Your Support Matters
Working equines are family assets and first responders. In both disasters, they are transporting people, food, water, medical supplies, and shelter materials when no vehicles can pass.
Their survival ensures human survival. As Emily Dulin, CEO of Brooke USA, explained: “Protecting these animals means protecting livelihoods, mobility, and survival.”
Silent victims, heroic helpers. “Equines are silent victims of every disaster. But they are also heroes—carrying people to safety, hauling relief supplies, and helping communities endure,” said Dr. Jim Hamilton, DVM, Chairman of Brooke USA and Disaster Response Veterinary Specialist.
How Working Equines Save Lives in Disasters
Go where vehicles can’t. Donkeys and mules safely navigate steep, narrow paths, flood-damaged tracks, and rubble-strewn streets.
Keep markets and clinics reachable. They transport food, medicine, and vulnerable people to health posts when roads are blocked.
Accelerate recovery. Healthy equids help families restart livelihoods—hauling building materials, water, and goods as communities rebuild.

FAQs
How will my donation be used?
Your gift funds emergency feed, water, veterinary care, and owner support for working horses, donkeys, and mules in flood- and earthquake-affected areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Funds are allocated based on greatest need and operational access.
Is Brooke USA working with Brooke in-country teams?
Yes. Brooke USA funds Brooke (Action for Working Horses & Donkeys) and trusted partners who have deep, long-standing relationships with equine-owning communities.
Why focus on animals during a human crisis?
Because healthy animals are a humanitarian response, they transport lifesaving supplies, maintain market access, and sustain family income—especially in areas where roads are destroyed.
Can I designate my gift to one country?
