In Partnership with Brooke Pakistan

Pakistan is home to more than six million working horses, donkeys, and mules — animals that collectively support an estimated 36 million people across transportation, agriculture, brick kilns, and coal mines. In many households, a single working equine sustains a family of eight, making their health directly tied to human survival. Yet despite this dependence, most work in extreme conditions with little access to veterinary care, adequate nutrition, or rest. Brooke Pakistan has already reached over 1,000 communities — including 515 brick kilns and 200 coal mines — improving welfare for more than 96,000 equines and the lives of over 85,000 people, with trained animal health providers ensuring that care continues long after the initial intervention.

Coal Mine Donkeys — Pakistan

Pakistan's coal mines are among the most punishing environments on earth — and for the donkeys forced to work inside them, suffering is constant and largely invisible. These animals descend into narrow, dark tunnels, breathing coal dust and hauling crushing loads through heat and airless conditions. Many develop serious wounds, joint damage, and chronic respiratory disease. Most have never received any form of care. Brooke USA is changing that — reaching donkeys in mines that have never been supported before, providing immediate treatment, and equipping owners with the tools to reduce suffering every day. This year alone, 100 mines are being reached, improving conditions for approximately 9,000 equines and 5,600 people. With continued support, this work can go further — bringing relief to animals that have long been out of sight and out of reach.

Brick Kilns — Pakistan

In Pakistan, thousands of families working in brick kilns face harsh conditions, poverty, and limited access to basic necessities for both people and their animals. Brooke USA’s Brick Kilns Project is dedicated to improving the welfare of working equines—donkeys, horses, and mules—who are essential to these communities, while also supporting the people who depend on them. Through veterinary care, farriery services, owner education, and community engagement, the project promotes humane treatment, reduces animal suffering, and helps increase productivity and income for families. By addressing both animal welfare and human livelihoods, the initiative creates sustainable, long-term change—offering healthier lives, greater dignity, and brighter futures for brick kiln communities across Pakistan.
