Because of Dorothy... A Legacy of Compassion Lives On

Brooke USA Foundation proudly announces the launch of a month-long celebration to honor the remarkable legacy of Dorothy Brooke—the visionary humanitarian who, through her courage and compassion, changed the world for working equines. Today is her birthday, and we look forward to bringing honor to her for 30 days.

Throughout June, Brooke USA invites you to reflect on the impact of Dorothy’s life and mission. Thanks to Dorothy, millions of working horses, donkeys, and mules—and the people who depend on them—have been given hope, care, and dignity.

Because of Dorothy...

After witnessing the heartbreaking condition of war horses left behind in Cairo after World War I, Dorothy Brooke took action. What began as a personal crusade to rescue suffering animals grew into a global movement. Her relentless advocacy led to the founding of the Brooke Hospital for Animals (now Brooke: Action for Working Horses & Donkeys), and later, Brooke USA Foundation was created to continue supporting this vital work. This year holds a special place in in the hearts of the Brooke USA family because we are celebrating 10 years of helping working equines and the people who depend on them to survive. 10 years of continuing Dorothy's legacy--join us in celebrating!

One person can make a difference. One person can be the catalyst for change.

See the letter below from The Morning Post where Dorothy asked for those who love horses to join her in saving those who had been forgotten.

It all started here. Her legacy continues with all of us.

Powerful Quotes to Start the Celebrations

Dorothy Brooke said: “So many people persist in giving me all the credit”, she writes in her diary, “that I do want to make it abundantly clear that it would be absolutely impossible for me to achieve any fraction of success but for the unselfish, sustained and invaluable help rendered by a great number of other people, who never received adequate recognition. I have been given many more pats on the back than I deserve, owing to the fact that it is my name which has always appeared in the papers, as I make all the appeals for money.” It was typical of her to take little credit for herself, yet she was Brooke’s driving force in the early days. Her persistence - added to great tact and personal charm – made all possible. Dorothy liked to call herself the backroom boy when in fact she was the dynamo that drove the others on.

As noted by one visitor the Brooke Hospital for the Animals in Cairo, “To me she was and always will be all that an animal welfare worker should be - knowledgeable, tactful, tolerant, full of sound common sense and never merely sentimental, with immense moral and physical courage. Add to this her wit and glorious sense of humor, and you have the portrait of an exceptional woman.”

Dorothy’s thoughts of the time ring true today, “To each peasant his beast of burden, be it horse, mule, or donkey, represents his only bit of capital. It is his only means of obtaining the barest living and not only for himself. Most of the men have large families to maintain, often with the addition of parents and other relatives. Somehow, all must be supported upon the pittance earned by a more than half-starved horse, mule, or donkey. Deprived of his animal, hunger stares the whole family in the face.”
