Honoring America’s Equine Heroes: A Legacy of Service, Sacrifice and Hope
From the Heart of Brooke USA: Celebrating the Equines Who Helped Build America — and Continue to Change Lives Today |
For 250 years, America’s story has been shaped by courage, resilience and partnership. Long before engines powered our farms, armies and industries, horses, donkeys and mules stood beside us — carrying soldiers into battle, transporting supplies across difficult terrain, plowing fields, building communities and helping our nation grow. The bond between humans and equines is woven into the very fabric of American history.
As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, Brooke USA is honoring the working equines whose strength and sacrifice helped build the nation we know today — while continuing our mission to protect and improve the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules around the world.
From historic battlefields to modern-day communities, equines remain heroes. Join us in honoring their legacy by supporting the working equines who continue to serve communities today. |

America’s Equine Heroes: A Legacy of Service and Sacrifice The Horses and Mules Who Helped Build a Nation
Throughout American history, horses and mules have been more than transportation — they have been partners in exploration, agriculture, industry and freedom.
During times of war, millions of horses and mules carried soldiers, transported supplies and provided essential support on the front lines. During times of peace, equines helped settle communities, cultivate farmland and connect a growing nation.
Their contributions are often overlooked, but their impact is undeniable.
As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, Brooke USA is proud to preserve and celebrate the stories of these incredible animals — while ensuring that today’s working equines receive the care, protection and respect they deserve.

Taking the Fight for Donkeys to Capitol Hill |
Nearly a century ago, Dorothy Brooke walked into the streets of Cairo and refused to look away from the suffering of thousands of former war horses left behind after World War I. She didn’t simply witness injustice — she took action. Her compassion, courage and determination sparked a movement that continues to protect working equines around the world today.
During Dorothy Brooke Month, Brooke USA honored her legacy by bringing her voice to the halls of Congress. Over three days of advocacy meetings on Capitol Hill, Brooke USA joined coalition partners from the Animal Welfare Institute, American Association of Equine Practitioners, Species Unite and the Virginia Partnership for Horses to meet with members of Congress and their staff about the urgent need to end the global donkey hide trade. |
Together, we shared the devastating realities facing donkeys worldwide. Millions of donkeys are threatened by slaughter to supply the demand for ejiao, a gelatin made from donkey hides. This cruel trade not only impacts donkey populations but also threatens the communities that depend on these animals for transportation, agriculture and livelihoods.
We met with the offices of more than 20 members of Congress, sharing stories from the field and advocating for stronger protections through the Ejiao Act (H.R. 5544) — legislation that would help protect donkeys and address this devastating crisis.
Like Dorothy Brooke, we believe change begins when people are willing to speak up. Advocacy is about showing up, building partnerships and ensuring that working equines are seen, valued and protected. The meetings on Capitol Hill are just the beginning. We need your voice to help encourage lawmakers to support the Ejiao Act and stand up for donkeys around the world. Join the fight to protect donkeys today.
