$163,500 Raised to Date for The Donkey Project! |
|
|
On July 1, we announced "The Donkey Project", an annual campaign to raise $1.5 million by June 30, 2024, helping 100,000 working donkeys worldwide. We are thrilled to announce that in two months, we have raised $163,500! We are 10% of the way to reaching our goal! So far, we have been able to help 10,900 working donkeys! Why?
"The Donkey Project" is intended to grow Brooke USA’s depth of work while raising more funds in support of working donkeys and the people who depend on them for survival in vulnerable communities worldwide.
Of the world’s 55.5 million donkeys, 43 million of them are working. As working livestock, donkeys are critical to the livelihoods of millions of people throughout the developing world. Who does it help? For 600 million people in some of the poorest places in the world, 100 million donkeys and other equines are the backbone of communities and their best means of making a living.
Without healthy working donkeys, people would not be able to put food on their tables, send their children to school or build better futures for themselves and their families. In summation, donkeys are essential to the livelihoods of people in developing countries.
The campaign allows for Brooke USA to calculate the approximate cost of care and treatment of donkeys throughout our programs, with the amount estimated at $15 per donkey. The impact of your donation:
$15.00 - Helps One Donkey $45.00 - Helps 3 Donkeys $150.00 - Helps 10 Donkeys $300.00 - Helps 20 Donkeys $750.00 - Helps 50 Donkeys $1,500.00 - Helps 100 Donkeys Will you help us reach the next goal of $300,000 by the end of October? That will mark 20% of the fundraising goal and will benefit 20,000 working donkeys. |

Families in several cities in Morocco rushed out of their homes and into the streets after a magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck at 11:11 p.m. on Sept. 8, 2023. A 4.9 magnitude aftershock followed 19 minutes later. This earthquake is the largest seismic activity since 1960. The search for survivors continues with more than 2,900 pronounced dead and 5,500 injured. A series of tremors continued in the aftershock, and there are some places rescue workers are unable to access. Together, we have raised $16,000 to date, which will be 100% directed to support SPANA, a global working animal charity that works across Morocco and is committed to supporting the country’s working animals. We only need to raise $4,000 more to meet our goal, will you help today by providing lifesaving support? Our hearts are heavy with this news of this devastation, and it is Brooke USA Foundation’s call to help when equine-dependent communities are in need. A SPANA team is onsite, providing vital support to working animals affected by this tragedy and will be developing a longer-term response plan to help animals and the communities that depend on them. Updates from the team on the ground (September 18):
SPANA teams are working tirelessly in the High Atlas Mountains – the area hardest hit by the devastating earthquake – to provide urgent veterinary treatment to injured and abandoned animals. In the last few days, three SPANA teams have worked across Anougal, Oulad Mtaa and other affected areas, and have successfully treated animals suffering from fractures, eye injuries, lameness and wounds. But the situation remains dire.
The teams are concerned with the availability of essential food, as right now there is nothing. SPANA teams have just secured 20 tons of feed for working animals hardest hit by the disaster. Without this intervention, these animals would starve. |

Story from the Field:
On Friday, September 15, SPANA's team provided emergency treatment, feed, and water to a donkey in Imi Nissli, who had been left trapped and fighting for his life after the earthquake. This donkey was safely retrieved from the wreckage of a building by the UK International Search and Rescue (ISAR) team, who were in the village providing support. Following a two-hour rescue operation, the ISAR team safely retrieved the donkey from the dangerous ruins. After carefully administering treatment, the SPANA team gave the donkey a whole bucket of water – which it quickly consumed. The donkey is expected to make a full recovery from his ordeal.
Your donations support the tireless efforts of SPANA as they provide urgent veterinary care and food to the working animals hardest hit by the disaster. SPANA teams have already treated hundreds of animals suffering from fractures, eye injuries, lameness, and wounds. But the situation remains dire, and with the availability of essential food still a major concern, SPANA has just secured 20 tons of feed for working animals hardest hit by the disaster. Without this intervention, these animals would starve.

Galleries of our September Events |
The month of September was busy for Brooke USA Foundation as our amazing Regional Advisory Councils hosted two events. The events were wonderful successes, and we look forward to planning more in Lexington, KY, and Southern Pines, NC, in 2024!
“Our Regional Advisory Councils (RACs) are the backbone of everything we do in local communities,” states Emily Dulin, CEO of Brooke USA, and creator of the organization’s RACs, grassroots community extensions dedicated to increasing awareness and raising funds for the mission. “It is thanks to the valued work of our RACs that we can interact and engage with new supporters; they are our voice as they share with friends and colleagues the importance of our work. These events allow us to make a hard issue – the plight of working horses, donkeys, and mules – a time to come together and do something good for others; for those that need it most.”

The Bluegrass Regional Advisory Council hosted 60 guests at The Secretariat Center in Lexington, KY, for an unforgettable evening during its inaugural Bourbon, Brews and Bites event on September 7th.
Hosted by local John Nicholson, equestrian executive and Event Chair and Board Member of the Brooke USA Bluegrass Regional Advisory Council, the event gathered local leaders, business owners, horse and donkey owners and enthusiasts, local business owners, and philanthropists for an energizing evening complete with traditional Kentucky barbecue, signature bourbon drinks, and an evening of coming together to celebrate while ideating plans for future Brooke USA programs in Lexington.
"We know how much the horse gives to us, and now it is our turn to share a fraction of the love and passion we have for these animals to help alleviate the suffering of those less fortunate," shared John Nicholson who is also a founding Board Member of Brooke USA.
The evening was rounded out by Ashlyn and Gidget, a 3-year-old BLM Burro jenny gathered from Shawave Mountains II, Nevada. She was domesticated as a yearling and is now a wonderful ambassador for the trainability and versatility of BLM Burros. She has shown across several states, including Texas, Michigan, Tennessee, and West Virginia, she has been featured on the cover of Equine Living in the Bluegrass magazine, been to a benefit event for the Mustang Heritage Foundation, and is currently filming for the movie “Morrow Road” up in Michigan. Guests were able to take photos and meet Gidget while sipping cocktails and listening to the folk rock sounds of The Deehawks. This band of friends has traveled the south and after retiring comes together to play some fun gigs! Their Folk-Rock sounds make for a fun evening of live entertainment, and Jamie Nicholson, nephew of Past Brooke USA Chair John Nicholson, is a member of the band.
We look forward to what 2024 holds for the Bluegrass Regional Advisory Council! |

The Southern Pines Regional Advisory Council welcomed guests to Films For A Cause: EO at the Sunrise Theater in Southern Pines, NC, on September 14 for an exclusive showing of the Academy Award nominated film.
The event was chaired by Brooke USA Board Chairman, Dr. Jim Hamilton, and Mary Warlick. Prior to the start of the movie, VIP ticket holders were able to mix and mingle during a cocktail hour on the lawn, while Kayden Muller Jassen, Hollywood actress and singer, and Brooke USA friend, met with children from the Boys & Girls Club of the Sandhills.
The event was a true success, raising more than $35,000 for the organization, with $5,000 of the proceeds directly benefiting the emergency campaign for Morocco.
Keynote speakers for the evening included Dr. Hamilton, Chair Emeritus of Brooke USA Dr. David Jones, and an introduction by Kayden. Thank you to the remarkable committee, sponsors and auction donors for making this inaugural event a success! |
