In Partnership with Cuba’s Horses
Cuba's nearly one million horses are not symbols of leisure — they are essential working partners for families who depend on them to haul goods, transport water, plow fields, and earn a living. For many households, especially in rural areas, the horse is the only available means of livelihood. Yet many of these animals are underfed, in poor condition, and without access to basic farrier or veterinary care. Brooke USA has partnered with Cuba's Horses for three years to address this and is now supporting two active projects — one in Havana focused on heat management and hydration for carriage horses, and one in Cienfuegos focused on improving the body condition of working horses, many of whom were found to be severely underweight. Through education, equipment, and support delivered via local cooperatives, this program is improving animal welfare while sustaining the livelihoods that depend on it.
