In rural Kenya, Amina, a mother of two daughters, relied on her donkeys to earn a living as a water vendor. But her daughter Neema was afraid of the donkeys—unstable and unpredictable, they seemed too large and unpredictable for a child to care for safely.
That changed when she was introduced to the Donkey Care Club —part of a dynamic initiative supported by Brooke USA.
Here’s how the transformation unfolded:
Learning how to care – During a village workshop, a local mentor, Baraka, demonstrated proper hoof cleaning—approaching donkeys calmly, safely asking them to lift a leg, and then gently removing debris.
Building confidence – Seeing the method in action, Neema found the courage to try herself—and quickly realized the donkey was gentle and cooperative when approached the right way.
Transformed relationships – Weeks later, Neema not only overcame her fear—she volunteered to clean the hooves daily and took pride in caring for the donkeys alongside her mother, Amina and her sister Zawadi.
Today, both sisters feel empowered, and Amina’s village is building a new culture of empathy, respect, and proper equine care.
