Provide emergency vet care and owner training at India's equine fairs and other areas

5,000.00

India's equine fairs are enormous congregations of animals and people, and often in locations with very limited resources.  As such, horses, mules  and donkeys are exposed to numerous welfare risks, such as injuries, wounds, dehydration, heat stress and disease. Our Brooke India teams visit dozens of these fairs each year and provide education and training to local communities, spreading awareness of the importance and benefits of good equine welfare practices, both for the animals and the people. The Fairs are a vital opportunity to reach equine owners, officials and service providers, all key to ensuring change in practice and better care.

This program has already achieved a great deal, and with the help of this gift could do even more. These are just a few of the recent achievements and why we want to do so much more:

Last year our team reached more than 100,000 working horses, donkeys and mules at these fairs, providing treatment for the animals while also building the awareness and knowledge of the various owners attending the fairs.

92 meetings were held with fair organizers to ensure basic facilities at the fair sites. (proper ramps for loading and unloading animals, giving access to water, shade and veterinary provision, and improving methods for disposing of waste and (sadly) carcasses. 82% of the fair sites provided appropriate ramps as a result.

Drinking water availability – hand pumps were installed at 76% of sites, tube wells at 40%, water tanks at 53% and mobile water tanks at 36%.

78% of sites had improved shade facilities, including the provision of ventilated tents during the summer season.

Of the 55 fairs visited, Brooke India was able to ensure the availability of green fodder at 87%, and dry feed at 91%, of the sites.

There were waste disposal facilities available at 58% of sites, and 56% provided proper facilities for safe disposal of deceased animals.

Training for Government Vet Officers,Para vets, Local Health Providers, Farriers and Hair Clippers was undertaken throughout the year, building knowledge on various themes such as the cause, symptoms and treatment of common equine diseases.  The team also advised on clinical examination, the proper method of drug administration, welfare friendly handling & restraining, wound management, hoof trimming, appropriate shoeing, first aid and sterilization of equipment.

This gift could go a long way toward these types of interventions not only in India, but in other countries where we're working!
