What's In A Name?

Brooke USA Announces Name Change to Brooke USA Foundation

New mission and tagline mark the nonprofit’s future

In July, Brooke USA announced a new name which reflects the organization’s evolution since 2016 into the country’s leading nonprofit focused on alleviating the suffering of working horses, donkeys and mules, and the people they serve. The new name, Brooke USA Foundation, ensures that those not acquainted with the Brooke family of charities, immediately understand that the organization is a reputable 501(c)3 allowing for conversation to easily flow into the mission and the pivotal work.

With the new name, Brooke USA Foundation also announced a new mission, responding to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a call for action to promote prosperity while protecting people, animals, and the planet:

To significantly improve the health, welfare, and productivity of working horses, donkeys and mules and the people who depend on them for survival worldwide. We are committed to sustainable economic development by reducing poverty, increasing food security, providing access to water, and raising basic standards of living through improved equine health and welfare. We accomplish this by raising funds and responsibly directing them to the areas of greatest need.

SDG’s recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection. Brooke USA’s is committed to reducing the suffering of both humans and equines who are at risk in developing nations.

“We do this through  funding and implementing programs to improve the quality of life and health of working equines and thereby positively impacting their economic sustainability, protecting the planet, securing gender equality and ensuring life on land resilience. We want to see healthy, happy people and equines that work in partnership to achieve sustainable local economies,” noted Katherine Kaneb, Chair of the Board of Directors of Brooke USA Foundation.

Two logos are available for usage; the original boxed logo, barely unaltered, features side views of a horse and a donkey with the new name, stacked on three lines. This logo, designed by Brooke USA Foundation’s Donor Relations Officer Kendall Bierer, is also available as composite of the stacked logo and the new tagline, Empowering Equines. Empowering People. The tagline supports Brooke USA Foundation's goal to easily give people an immediate feel for the organization’s work.

Brooke USA Foundation Presents Historical Painting to the

National WWI Museum and Memorial

(L-R): Artist Yvonne Todd, Brooke USA CEO Emily Dulin, Historian and Brooke USA Volunteer Jo Ellen Hayden, and Jonathan Casey, Director of Archives of the National WWI Museum and Memorial.

Brooke USA’s history is deeply intertwined with the historical effects of WW1. In fact, our existence is due to the Great War.

Back in 1930, a young Dorothy Brooke moved to Cairo with her husband, a major general in the British army. He was appointed to command the British cavalry in Egypt. It was there that Dorothy realized that she needed to save the old war horses who had served during the war and had been sold and abandoned. These horses, now old, lived a life of suffering and hardship.

Dorothy decided to buy every single one back and nurse them back to health or humanely euthanize them. So, she wrote to the London Times to raise £5,000 for her cause. Well, she received $25,000, achieved her goal and then, founded the Brooke Hospital for the Animals in Cairo which is still in existence.

From these humble beginnings, the Brooke name represents the largest and most recognized charity focused on alleviating the suffering of working horses, donkeys and mules and the people they serve in vulnerable communities across the developing world.

Brooke USA, a Brooke sister organization, supports the work of Brooke and that of other organizations with similar missions. We grant funds to programs which we then monitor and evaluate.

With that said, our national history is also related to that of the Brooke’s. Approximately 1 million American horses and mules served allied forces in Europe during WW1, even before the US entered the war. It is said that only 600 returned after the war.

In 2019, Brooke USA as part of the WW1 Centennial and thanks to equestrian historian and writer, JoEllen, developed the Horse Heroes section of the Centennial’s Commission website which lives in perpetuity at the Library of Congress.

Brooke USA gifted a beautiful painting by artist Yvonne Todd, during a presentation at the National WWI Museum and Memorial. -It was a beautiful presentation to commemorate the work of the equines who sacrificed their lives during WW1.

Brooke USA Ranked #1 for The Chronicle of the Horse

Cathy Moss Dattel has been awarded the Volunteer of the Year award for her tireless efforts to help working horses, donkeys and mules worldwide.

Her role as a Brooke USA Dot led to her idea to create Paint Hope Orange (www.painthopeorange.com) an online shopping portal that benefits Brooke USA through donated items. Cathy raised money in 2020 to help with our global projects through Paint Hope Orange, as well as a tack room challenge with her barn, attending horse shows and creating merchandise on behalf of Brooke USA for the annual Brooke USA's Sunset Polo® & White Party. Her shirts show the word "Hope" in different languages, reflecting our funded work, and she is the example of the Power of ONE.

Cathy is an animal lover to the core, and her two rescue donkeys, Charlotte and Isabella (The Donkey Girls) are strong supporters of Brooke USA Foundation.

Brooke USA Foundation is proud to announce Melissa Klaerner as Volunteer of the Year, joining Cathy for their tremendous efforts.

As Founding Chair of Brooke USA’s Northern California Regional Advisory Council, Melissa is a champion for our cause. The Regional Advisory Councils serve as an extension of Brooke USA’s Board of Directors and provide the organization with eyes and ears on the ground nationwide. For the last two years, Melissa has led Brooke USA’s presence at horse shows across the region organized by West Palms Event Management and Langer Equestrian.

In 2019, Melissa led the exciting and fun barn challenge at Woodside to raise funds and awareness for the plight of working equines, and most recently she helped design and underwrite a Brooke USA Foundation jump that was first used to raise funds at June's Woodside Circuit Grand Prix. Both the barn challenge and jump continue to serve as fundraising elements for Brooke USA across equestrian shows in Northern California.

Melissa is an avid equestrian and animal lover. She has been involved with Brooke USA since our establishment in 2007, and her passion is evident in every task she takes on. She is a proud Brooke USA Dot and is a member of the Dorothy Brooke Society.

Thank you Cathy and Melissa for everything you do and have done for working horses, donkeys and mules!

Through the programs we fund, Brooke USA helps equine owners, service providers and governments in the developing world to implement scientifically proven, practical, sustainable, and culturally relevant solutions to enormous animal welfare challenges. Making a difference in the lives of these animals benefits the very poor families who depend on them to earn a living.

Your support of Brooke USA’s Americas Fund will help us purchase 233 demo plots in rural communities in Nicaragua. These demo plots are used to teach and train villagers on the basics of fodder cultivation – from planting to storing food for their equines. Cost per plot $500.

In July, Brooke USA Foundation CEO, Emily Dulin and Community Development Manager, Jina O’Neill, visited with our Regional Advisory Councils in North and South Carolina.

In Southern Pines, NC we hosted a dinner reception, along with our Southern Pines Chair, Robin Greenwood and founding Board Member, Dr. Jim Hamilton. The reception was for both new and seasoned supporters of the organization to hear about our current projects and new mission.

In Campobello, SC (the Foothills Regional Advisory Council) we hosted a dinner reception at the home of our Chair, Sally Frick. The goal was to discuss our upcoming event Divertimentos & Dressage on October 21st.

And our final stop was in Aiken, SC. We visited with our Chair, Katie Roth and the Aiken Council to continue planning an upcoming event in October (details coming soon).

Thank you so much to our Carolina Councils. We could not fulfill our mission without your help.

Brooke USA Foundation @ Woodside Horse Shows

Brooke USA is honored to be the 2021 Charity Partner of all shows taking place at The Horse Park at Woodside (located in Redwood City, CA). We had a successful two weeks during the Woodside Summer Shows, and we are also excited to announce our upcoming shows at the Silicon Valley Equestrian Festival (August 25-September5). During the opening two weeks of the charity partnership we raised over $15,000 through our Northern California Regional Advisory Council. The efforts included a donation QR code, seen throughout the show, a hospitality cart and our "Jump for the Cause", a Brooke USA Foundation branded jump featuring working equines and supporters' horses, which underwrote the cost of the jump.

On September 29, we will be bringing back our Barn Challenge during the Sacramento International, which will run until October 10. The barn challenge is the brainchild of Northern California Regional Advisory Council Chair Melissa Klaerner. In the past, the event has raised more than $12,000 and reached new supporters in California to help Brooke USA continue our mission to empower equines through animal welfare initiatives, as well as the people who depend on them to survive in vulnerable communities. If you are interested in participating in the barn challenge or volunteering, please contact Jina O'Neill.

A special thank you to West Palms Events for their support. We would also like to thank JB Horse Standards for our beautiful jump and Turf and Industrial Equipment for our Brooke-mobile.

We are now looking ahead to our next show in Sonoma this September. An exciting announcement will be coming soon, so stay tuned!
